OTTAWA — Canada’s higher education sector is facing a deepening crisis following the federal government’s strict caps on international student permits. The latest casualty of these policies is the historic Algonquin College campus in Perth, near Ottawa, which is slated for closure. The decision has ignited fierce “Save Our College” protests among students and community members who fear the loss of a vital educational institution.
The closure is primarily driven by a massive financial deficit that the college has been unable to bridge, exacerbated by a sharp decline in international student enrollments. The Perth campus is globally renowned for its specialized “Heritage Trades” programs, including Heritage Masonry and Carpentry. Perth Mayor Judy Brown expressed grave concerns, stating that the shutdown would not only damage the local economy but also erode the town’s unique cultural and architectural heritage.
The situation has sparked a heated debate regarding the business models of Canadian colleges. Some students and critics argue that institutions have long exploited international students as “cash cows” to balance their books. Student Robin Gifford remarked that if an institution’s survival depends entirely on foreign tuition fees, it represents a fundamental failure of management.
