Alberta Reports Record 255 Flu Deaths as Influenza A (H3N2) Sweeps Across Canada

Edmonton: Canada’s current influenza season is causing a severe public health crisis, with hospitals across the country reportedly reaching breaking point. The province of Alberta has been hit particularly hard, recording a staggering 255 deaths so far this season—a record high for the region. This follows a trend of increasing mortality, compared to 236 deaths in the 2024-25 season and 171 the year prior.

Health experts point to a combination of high viral virulence and gaps in vaccine efficacy as the primary drivers of this year’s crisis. The dominant strain currently circulating is Influenza A (H3N2), which officials at Toronto General Hospital describe as significantly more dangerous than other seasonal variants. The surge in cases has placed emergency departments under immense pressure, with many facilities operating at over-capacity.

While flu activity has begun to subside in some parts of the country, infection rates in Alberta remain alarmingly high. Political opposition groups have criticized the provincial administration, citing a lack of robust vaccination campaigns as a key factor in the rising death toll.

Medical experts warn that without a significant infusion of resources into the healthcare system and improved preventative measures, the country’s medical infrastructure could face a total collapse if similar trends continue in future seasons.
