EDMONTON — The Alberta government has announced the cancellation of the January diploma exams for 12th-grade students, as well as the Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests, in response to an ongoing three-week-long teachers’ strike. This decision is immediately effective and applies to all schools across the province.
The Provincial Education Ministry confirmed the cancellation, stating that the measure was necessary given the prolonged disruption to academic instruction caused by the industrial action.
The canceled examinations will be made available to students on an optional basis later in the academic year—specifically in April or June 2026, according to the ministry.
For students who choose not to write the optional exam, the final grade will be based on the marks provided by their respective schools. The ministry emphasized that this cancellation will not negatively impact students’ graduation requirements or their admission prospects for post-secondary programs.
The move aims to provide certainty and relief to students who have faced considerable stress and academic disruption during the extended period of the teachers’ strike. The government continues to encourage a resolution between the striking educators and the province.
