‘Alberta Clipper’ Hits Toronto: Yellow Alert Issued for GTA

Toronto: Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning for Toronto and the surrounding Greater Toronto Area (GTA) as an Alberta Clipper sweeps through the region. The fast-moving winter system is expected to dump up to 10 centimeters of snow across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, and the York and Durham regions throughout Wednesday.

Meteorologists report that the snow began early Wednesday morning and is expected to persist until the late afternoon or early evening. The “Clipper”—named for its rapid speed and origin in Western Canada—is causing significant concern for commuters due to reduced visibility and accumulating snow on major highways like the 401 and the DVP.

Impact on Commute and Schools

While school boards, including the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Catholic board, have kept schools open and buses running, they have warned of potential delays. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution, as the blowing snow is expected to create “tricky” and “hazardous” conditions during both the morning and evening rush hours.

Frigid Temperatures and Thin Ice Warnings

The snowfall comes amidst a prolonged cold snap. Although temperatures may briefly moderate to near -1°C on Wednesday, wind chills are making it feel closer to -16°C. The Toronto Police Service has issued a stern warning regarding local waterways and the Toronto Harbour.

“Over the past several weeks, fluctuating temperatures have prevented ice from forming consistently. Any ice that begins to form now is new, unstable, and extremely dangerous. Stay off the ice,” the police statement urged.

Outlook for the Weekend

The cold is expected to intensify as the system passes. By Saturday, temperatures are forecast to plummet to a low of -11°C or lower, with some models suggesting it could be the coldest weekend of the winter so far. Residents are advised to dress in layers and limit outdoor exposure as the “bone-chilling” temperatures return.
