KITCHENER: The Waterloo Regional Police are launching a new initiative aimed at helping recover stolen bicycles. In response to a widespread increase in bicycle thefts across the city, the police are partnering with “529 Garage,” a free bicycle registration program. By registering bicycles through this program, users will receive an immediate alert if their bike is stolen, which will then be sent to other users in the area. This is expected to significantly aid in the swift recovery of stolen bicycles.
The database maintained by 529 Garage contains information on both stolen and recovered bicycles, proving beneficial for both bike owners and the police. Over the past five years, more than 5,400 bicycles have been stolen in the Waterloo region, with only 432 of them successfully recovered.
