Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has welcomed moves for Canada to become the European Union’s (EU) first “associate member.” Carney expressed his support while addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, responding favorably to a proposal presented recently by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
However, U.S. President Donald Trump strongly criticized the move, warning that if done with bad intentions, it would be viewed as a “hostile act” and would lead to heavier tariffs being imposed on Europe.
Vote to Be Held in Parliament
At a press conference, Carney announced that deepening this partnership with the European Union will be debated in the Canadian Parliament and put to a final vote. He clarified that Canada is not seeking full membership. Responding to Trump’s criticisms, Carney added that a stronger alliance with Europe would actually make Canada a “better partner” to the United States.
He emphasized that Canada and the European Union are not merely fair-weather friends, noting that both sides share the same vision regarding the protection of the rule of law, individual freedom, and democracy. Meanwhile, Trump, who accused closer ties between Canada and the EU of being a hostile move in a trade war, labeled Canada a “bad trading partner” and dismissed the associate membership discussions.
