Nova Scotia- Environment Canada has issued a fresh rainfall warning for northern regions of Cape Breton Island, cautioning that persistent heavy downpours will continue. Forecasters predict an additional 25 to 40 millimeters of rain across the region, with higher localized amounts possible. The weather agency warned that because previous days of torrential downpours have severely saturated the soil, the ground’s capacity to absorb water is critically reduced, elevating the risk of further surface flooding.
The warning follows a severe weekend storm that caused widespread destruction across Cape Breton Island and northern canal regions. Torrential floodwaters washed out roads, collapsed bridges, and severely damaged retaining walls.
Tragedy struck Richmond County over the weekend when emergency crews initiated a search after locating an abandoned vehicle near a submerged bridge. On Saturday afternoon, search teams recovered the body of a 46-year-old woman in the flooded area near Cleveland, Nova Scotia.
Emphasizing public safety, the province’s Emergency Management Office has urged all motorists to strictly follow directions from local authorities, avoid traveling through affected areas, and never attempt to drive across flooded roadways.
