TORONTO — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall warning for a wide range of Whole Foods Market brand products across Ontario due to potential Salmonella contamination. The health recall impacts various salsas, guacamoles, pico de gallo, and prepared meals distributed both in retail stores and through online ordering channels in Ontario.
Link to US Outbreak Investigation
According to the CFIA, the Canadian recall stems from a broader investigation led by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding a multi-state Salmonella Javiana outbreak linked to contaminated fresh jalapeño peppers grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. In the United States, the tainted peppers have been linked to over 340 reported illnesses and dozens of hospitalizations.
Affected Products and Best-Before Dates
The recall covers products sold with best-before dates ranging from August 7 through August 16. Specific items identified by health inspectors include:
- Salsas (340g): Salsa Fresca Medium, Salsa Verde Mild, and Salsa Roja Medium.
- Pico de Gallo & Specialty Salsas (284g): Pico de Gallo Mild, Pico de Gallo Spicy, and Pineapple Mango Salsa Mild.
- Guacamoles: Small, Hot, Mild, and Mild Guacamole with No Tomato.
- Prepared Meal Solutions: Ready-to-eat items containing fresh jalapeños, including Chicken Quesadillas.
Public Health Guidance
The CFIA confirmed that no illnesses related to the consumption of these recalled products have been reported within Canada to date. However, health authorities strongly advise consumers who may have purchased these items not to consume them. Affected products should be immediately discarded or returned to the point of purchase for a full refund.
The agency emphasized that food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria may not appear or smell spoiled but can still cause serious gastrointestinal illness. While healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea, vulnerable demographics—including young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals—face heightened risks of severe complications.
