Toronto: A police officer was shot in Toronto while investigating an e-bike theft. The incident occurred early Thursday morning in St. James Town located in the downtown area. Police have taken a 27-year-old suspect into custody in connection with the shooting.
The officer sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh while attempting to pursue and apprehend the suspect, who was spotted acting suspiciously. Deputy Chief Lauren Pogue told the media that officers did not return fire. Colleagues immediately administered emergency first aid to the injured officer before he was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital. Although the officer’s injuries are serious, they are non-life-threatening.
Police stated that the suspect was arrested at the scene along with the firearm. The suspect, who was out on bail for a previous firearm-related offense, is also wanted for other serious crimes in Peel Region and Waterloo. A search is ongoing for a second suspect involved in the case.
The Deputy Chief remarked that pointing a gun at officers responding to a minor theft investigation is deeply concerning. She also called for strict legal action against such crimes. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow wished the officer a speedy recovery and commended the police for their timely response.
