ONTARIO: Grand River Transit (GRT) has launched a new pilot program designed to support older adults by providing free transit rides one day each week. Under the initiative, which took effect on July 1, anyone turning 65 this year or older can travel entirely free for one day every week, provided they use the official GRT Pay mobile application.
The special day pass offers unlimited travel across the entire GRT network, including GRT buses, ION light rail trains, MobilityPLUS vehicles, and Kiwanis Transit.
Eligible seniors will automatically receive a new day pass in their GRT Pay app every Wednesday. Users then have the flexibility to choose which day of the week they wish to activate and use the pass.
The GRT Pay app is available for download on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. To access the benefit, riders must complete a one-time age verification process within the app and ensure they activate their day pass before boarding any GRT vehicle. This pilot project is scheduled to run until January 5, 2027.
