Measles outbreak declared in south-central region of New Brunswick

Fredericton: The Department of Health has warned of a measles outbreak spreading in the south-central region of New Brunswick. Figures released on Tuesday indicate that three people in Sussex have confirmed cases, and five others are suspected to have the disease.

The first case was reported a week ago in a person who arrived in Sussex from another province between June 22 and 23. Dr. Kimberly Barker, Regional Medical Officer of Health for Sussex, warned that more people in the area could be infected, including those with symptoms who are staying home without seeking medical attention.

She also stated that the low measles vaccination rate among children in the province is increasing the fear of spread. The province recently confirmed that the children’s vaccination rate here is below the 95 percent threshold needed to prevent the spread of the disease. Dr. Barker did not disclose the age of the infected individuals, citing privacy concerns.
