The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a widespread recall for several varieties of salads, cheeses, and meal kits due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The primary focus of the alert is the Co-op brand’s Creamy Garlic and Spinach Salad, which was distributed throughout Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories. Health officials have specifically warned consumers not to eat salads with best-before dates ranging from March 24 to April 4, 2026, advising that these items be discarded or returned to the store immediately.
Beyond the salad products, the recall has been extended nationwide to include several popular cheese brands. Affected items include Bothwell brand’s Shredded Three-Cheese Nacho Blend in 400g and 1kg packages, Gold Stream brand’s Cheddar Style Shredded Processed Cheese, and Paradise Island brand’s Asiago Shredded Cheese. The CFIA has also expanded a previous warning regarding cheese ingredients used in HelloFresh meal kits, signaling a broader concern for pre-packaged ingredients sold directly to consumers.
Health experts warn that Listeria is particularly dangerous because contaminated food may not show any visible signs of spoilage or off-smells. The infection, known as listeriosis, can cause severe symptoms including persistent fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and intense headaches. While the general population may experience mild illness, the risk is significantly higher for pregnant women, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, for whom the infection can be life-threatening.
Although no illnesses have been officially reported in connection with these products so far, the CFIA is taking these measures as a necessary precaution to ensure public safety. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for any of the listed brands and products. A comprehensive list of all affected items and their specific batch codes is currently hosted on the official Canadian Food Inspection Agency website for public reference.
