Global Leaders Condemn Kashmir Terror Attack, Canada’s Silence Notable

Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir : A deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025, has drawn widespread condemnation from world leaders, though Canada has yet to publicly respond, raising questions amid strained India-Canada relations.

The attack, which claimed lives and shook the serene valley, prompted swift reactions from global figures. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed solidarity, stating, “America stands with India against terrorism.” Russian President Vladimir Putin called the attack “a barbaric act,” while Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reaffirmed Italy’s support for India’s fight against extremism. Leaders from France, Japan, and the UK also extended condolences, emphasizing unity in combating terrorism.

Notably absent from the chorus of condemnation was any statement from Canadian leadership. While Canada has historically denounced terror attacks in India, such as the 2019 Pulwama attack, no official response from Ottawa has been reported for the Pahalgam incident. The silence comes against the backdrop of deteriorating India-Canada ties, strained since 2023 over the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani activist, in British Columbia. Diplomatic tensions, including mutual expulsions of diplomats, may have contributed to the lack of a public statement.

Analysts suggest Canada’s muted response could reflect cautious diplomacy amid ongoing bilateral friction. However, the absence of condemnation risks further straining relations with India, a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region. As the international community rallies behind India, attention now turns to whether Canada will break its silence and join global calls for justice in the wake of this tragic attack.

  1. The recent terror attack in Pahalgam is a stark reminder of the persistent threat of extremism in the region. It’s heartening to see global leaders unite in condemning such acts, but Canada’s silence is concerning. Given the strained relations between India and Canada, this lack of response could further damage diplomatic ties. The international community’s solidarity is crucial, but it’s equally important for all nations to stand together against terrorism. Canada’s cautious approach might be strategic, but it risks being perceived as indifference. Do you think Canada’s silence is a diplomatic misstep, or is there more to this silence than meets the eye?
