Edmonton Imposes Strict Firework Permit Requirements

EDMONTON — The City of Edmonton has issued a stern warning regarding the use of fireworks, implementing strict controls ahead of upcoming celebrations, including Diwali.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) has advised residents that stringent adherence to city bylaws concerning fireworks is now mandatory within city limits. Under City Council regulations, only individuals holding a government-approved permit are authorized to use fireworks anywhere within the municipal boundaries.

City officials stated that discharging fireworks without the necessary permit is illegal. These controls are being enforced to encourage safe celebrations and mitigate potential risks such as fires and accidents. Violators face severe penalties, with fines of up to $10,000 for non-compliance.

Last year, enforcement efforts registered a high number of incidents, with 127 cases recorded between October and December for illegal discharge of fireworks. These violations resulted in the collection of over $6,000 in fines. Residents are urged to obtain the required permits to ensure their festivities remain safe and lawful.
