JAKARTA — An explosion at a high school mosque in Indonesia injured 54 people during Friday prayers, according to initial reports. The majority of the injured are students, following the blast which occurred around noon. The incident took place at SMA 27, a state high school located within a naval compound in the North Kelapa Gading area.
Panic ensued among students and local residents, who fled the scene after hearing two loud explosions and seeing smoke fill the mosque shortly after the sermon began. Most of the injuries resulted from flying glass shards. Hospital authorities confirmed that 20 students are still undergoing treatment, with three reported to be in critical condition.
Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri, who inspected the scene, stated that the cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, though the blast occurred near the mosque’s microphone. Toy guns were reportedly recovered near the mosque as part of the investigation. Police confirmed that the investigation report would be made public soon.
